Job Summary

The Legal Editor will be working with our Content Team, which is responsible for identifying and reporting on relevant federal, state, and local statutes, regulations, case law and other legal guidance that affect our clients and products.

This is a temporary, project-based position that we expect to last for three to four months at 32 hours per week. There will be some flexibility in hours, but at least half of the work should be done between Monday and Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Pacific time. This is due to the need to collaborate with and ask questions of other team members, as well as be reached by team members during standard business hours.

The project is the merging of two sets of content in the content management system of a new website. Each set of content covers employment laws in all 50 states, and federally, and has several thousand individual entries. You will be responsible for reading through the entries that match up with one another and combining them in a logical and legally sound manner, often cutting significant portions of the original content in order to make it more accessible to a layperson. You will also need to be willing to receive and implement feedback and work with the others who are contributing to this project to ensure that the results are cohesive. This work will be tedious and will require true attention to detail. You will know more about state employment laws at the end of this than you ever thought possible.

The ideal candidate will have a proven record of understanding and writing accurately and concisely about legislation and policy matters, meeting deadlines, following directions precisely, and working as part of a cohesive team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Content merging, creation, and maintenance. Although your primary task will be to merge content, you may occasionally be asked to synthesize content or update the pages you have already completed.
  • Legislative research assistance. If you run into issues where the two sets of content do not agree with one another, you will be asked to put on your sleuthing hat, figure out which is correct, and update the other piece of content accordingly.
  • Formatting tasks in the content management system. Part of your job will be setting up the new, singular piece of content in our content management system, Contentful, so that it renders correctly in the new website. No particular past experience is necessary for this, but you should be very comfortable with technology.

Qualifications

  • Legal training. Paralegals, law students, and J.D.s are all welcome to apply.
  • Ability to commit to the entire project. We are on an extremely tight deadline and need someone who is willing to hunker down and see this through.
  • Experience with employment law or projects that required combining of laws or legal summaries preferred but not required.
