What you will do:

Shadow And Act is the premier digital destination for Black entertainment news, covering film, TV, webseries and Broadway. The Copy Editor for Shadow And Act will quality check all editorial content prior to publication on web and mobile platforms, including acting as the last line of defense against overall article tonality, content flow, grammar and misspellings. This person will also be responsible for knowing and adhering to S&A’s editorial handbook and style guide.

This position is a Contract (1099) remote position that works with the editorial team and reports directly to the Managing Editor, Shadow and Act.

This contract role is 20-30 hours per week for 6 months.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensure text is well written, logically structured and in the right style for the intended audience
  • Correct grammar and spelling as needed
  • Ensure text is in line with the publisher’s ‘house style’ – for example, that hyphens, capital letters and optional spellings are used consistently
  • Ensure all content is fact-checked, and backed by reliable sources
  • Raising queries with the text author as needed
  • Ability to alert team(s) of any potential legal problems in the text, such as libelous statements or breach of copyright, and discussing them with the publisher
  • Ensure text is not potentially prejudiced, ableist and does not contain any homophobic language, removing it immediately and flagging it with the author and editorial team
  • Check illustrations and captions, ensuring they are correct

Qualifications:

  • Years of Experience: 2-3 years experience in a digital publishing
  • Technologies: Preferred experienced with WordPress
  • Competencies:
    • Excellent written English, including good spelling and grammar
    • The ability to structure and restructure pieces for optimal clarity and effect
    • A meticulous approach to work and an eye for detail
    • The ability to communicate and work with writers to produce the best possible pieces
    • A knack for crafting clickable headlines while maintaining brand integrity
    • The ability to maintain high-quality work while meeting tight deadlines
    • A love of and feel for language
  • Preferred Interests: Love for Black TV, film and community
